On the Lake & Around the Park

Wind & waves

Black Lake is large and open — afternoon winds can build a real chop. Check the boating-condition card above before launching any small craft.

Dress in layers

Northern Michigan mornings on the water run cool even in midsummer. Bring a jacket for early paddles and evening campfires.

Rain & storms

Thunderstorms can roll in fast over the lake. If you hear thunder, head to shore immediately — lightning danger is real on open water.

Sun & UV

Sun reflects off the water and intensifies exposure. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and drink plenty of water on hot days.

Visibility

Fog can settle over Black Lake in the early morning. If visibility drops, delay boating until it lifts.
